Youth In Government by Charlotte Gardner
Last Thursday a group of four girls got the chance to travel to Camp Eberhart in Three Rivers for the Youth In Government fall conference. Youth In Government isis a program of the YMCA of the USA that allows high school students to serve in model governments at the local, state, national, and international levels. For the fall conference, you listen to running candidates give speeches and then at the end of the day, vote for the government. This all comes to play for the spring conference, which is an overnight event in Lansing. Every group will create a bill and present it. The government will then vote if it should become a law or not.
Senior Jessica Richardson-Smaller said: “Being that I had not been to the fall conference since freshman year, I was very excited to see the new things that they have added or changed. It was kind of difficult to find out where to go and who to talk to, as it was just us four and we had no one to lead us, but being the eldest one, I was able to help take charge and find out what we needed to do. We ended up joining Union City and hanging out with them for the day. We met a bunch of new people, listened to all the candidates talk and share things about themselves, and ultimately voted on who we thought would help lead YIG at the Spring conference.”
If this is something that you may be interested in participating in, then make sure you let Mrs. TerHaar know can help create a bill and be able to go to the spring conference.
