Iowa Caucus Results by Benjamin Schoonmaker
On Monday, the Iowa Caucuses were held for the Republican Primaries. Presidential candidate Donald Trump won by a landslide. His numbers broke the record for Iowa.
Trump had 51% of the Republican vote, the largest margin in GOP history for the state. Florida governor Ron DeSantis has the second highest number of voters, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley followed close behind. DeSantis and Nikki Haley voters combined represent 40%, still shadowed by Trump’s 51%. Meanwhile, the Iowa Caucus results for the Democratic Primaries have not come in yet because a large number of Democrat voters have done so by mail this year. It is the first time the state has done mail-ins for its primaries.
Multiple Republican candidates dropped out before the primaries started, such as Mike Pence and Tim Scott, both who dropped out in the late months of last year. Upon the Iowa Caucus results, presidential candidates Vivek Ramaswamy and Asa Hutchinson dropped out as well. Ramaswamy came in 4th place with around 8% of the vote. While he was way above the candidates below him, he was also way behind the candidates who received more. Knowing he had little chance at that point, he gave his full support to Trump and suspended his campaign.
As candidates drop out, the increasingly narrow options will lead to more concentrated votes, meaning that DeSantis and Haley have a chance at getting closer to Trump’s projected numbers in other states. DeSantis spent a huge amount of his time and campaign funds on Iowa, hoping the caucus results would favor him. The disappointing numbers and low campaign fund left seem discouraging for the presidential candidate.
The 2024 United States primary elections started on January 15th and will go until September 10th. Iowa is the first state in the primaries, meaning that it is a big deal for candidates. How the Iowa Caucus goes can sway future votes, as people will be more likely to vote for the person who seems to already be winning. Focus will soon shift to New Hampshire. The state is the second to hold its primary election caucus and will do so on January 23rd.
Many think Trump has no chance at losing the primary even if he has 91 criminal charges pending. At the same time, many are hopeful at the chance that Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley could pull through and replace the former president as the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
