AP Class Trip Rescheduled by Benjamin Schoonmaker
In November, Saugatuck staff members Mr. Green and Mr. Walker planned to take two classes to Chicago to see a play on January 10th. By chance, the first snow day for the 2023-2024 school year at Saugatuck occurred on January 10th. While the school body as a whole was excited in light of school being canceled for the day, a lot of students were left disappointed being unable to go with their class to Chicago.
Mr. Green and Mr. Walker planned to take both the AP Government and AP US History classes to the play Hamilton. The two classes are focused around the history of the United States and Hamilton would be a good and fun experience to learn more about the foundation of America. Hamilton surrounds itself around the Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton was a military officer, statesman, and the first secretary of the treasury under President George Washington. The musical starts out just before the Revolutionary War and follows through the time just after, with the building up of the Articles of Confederation and its reformation into the Constitution. The musical portrays the debates between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists regarding what the US government should look like and how it should function.
Hamilton is composed and lyricised by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It features a diverse and skilled cast and creative team. While Miranda himself isn’t starring as Hamilton in the theater in Chicago, the one playing the Founding Father is said to be just as good if not better.
Despite the weather last Wednesday, AP Gov and APUSH students were met with a pleasant surprise when they learned that the class trip had only merely been postponed, and not canceled. I’m sure the classes are grateful that the theater is cooperating with Saugatuck to allow the two classes to experience the beauty and masterpiece of Hamilton. As of now, the trip is scheduled for January 24th. Hopefully the weather will be fair and not create any further problems regarding the trip.
