Haley Rivera by Jessica Richardson-Smaller
This week, we had the opportunity to interview different seniors, finding out more about their senior year so far and what they plan to do after graduation. The first senior I interviewed was Haley Rivera.
After spending a lot of time choosing between colleges and finding out which would fit best for Haley, she has decided on attending Saginaw Valley State University on the northeast side of Michigan. She is excited to be committed there and will pursue a degree in psychology.
Haley went on to discuss her feelings/thoughts about her senior year so far: “During my high school career, I spent a lot of time participating in athletics. I believe any athlete is excited about their senior year sports season. Although soccer is just starting, I am very pleased with how my volleyball and basketball seasons came to an end. Also, throughout the school year, I enjoyed my class schedule for the most part, which made it a lot easier for me.”
Her favorite memory from this year would have been winning basketball districts for the first time in almost 20 years, and the Title IX game, which was held in February. Her favorite club or sport that she was involved in here at Saugatuck was basketball, although she enjoyed participating in volleyball and soccer. As the year comes to an end, she talked about how she was looking forward to hopefully making it to another district final in soccer and winning, as the soccer season has just started. Before the year ends, Haley wants to go through the seniors' festivities and traditions like decision day and running through the hallway in order to feel those last moments of high school.
The last question she was asked was if she could give one piece of advice to underclassmen, what it would be? She states: “One piece of advice I have for underclassmen is to take your freshman year seriously. Those grades you receive are ultimately critical to your gpa and can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run if you decide to go to college. Also, I believe that you should challenge yourself with your course schedule to help prepare you for college.”
