Detroit Red Wings v. Chicago Blackhawks Game by Novella DeGraaf
This would seem like your normal NHL hockey game; however, the meaning and legacy behind the game went further than being labeled a “normal” game. This wasn’t just because the teams have a history going back between the rivaling cities, but it had to do with a very special and valued player, Patrick Kane.
Even though Partick is only in his mid 30s, he is still considered one of the oldest players right now in the NHL league. However, what many people don’t know about him is that before he joined the Detroit Red Wings, he was on the Chicago Blackhawks. His career had basically started when he was on the Blackhawks. When playing for both of these teams, he was and is a huge asset to the teams.
When Patrick Kane was brought into the NHL league, he had been first overall in the draft getting picked, with no hesitation, by the Blackhawks. He ended up spending his first 16 seasons in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, creating a tight bond and connection with the players and community. Along with that, as a former league and playoff MVP, he helped the Blackhawks to win 3 Stanley Cups in the 15-plus seasons that he spent there. After several strong seasons with the Blackhawks, he was then traded off to the New York Rangers in February of 2023. His time did not last too long with the Rangers though. With a resurfacing hip injury, he was taken off the team in hopes he would recover, and that he did. After a long healing process, involving surgeries and rehabilitation, he was ready to get back into the NHL. After being signed back in on November 28, 2023, he joined the Detroit Red Wings on a one-year contract through the 2023-2024 season.
The actual game between the two teams took place on February 25, 2024, and it turned out to be a very nerve wracking match, coming down to the final minutes. In the first period Daniel Sporng got the first goal for the Wings, while in the second the Blackhawks got two goals, one coming from MacKenzie Entwistle and the other from Nick Foligno. To tie up the game in the third, the Wings needed another goal which Alex DeBrincat delivered. With both teams tied, the game was then carried into overtime. Right into overtime, Alex DeBrincat got a great rebound off of the goalie, they then sent it to the middle of the ice where Patrick Kane sat waiting. At this time no defense was able to catch up to him so it was a battle between him and the goalkeeper. Taking the goalie by surprise he shot right underneath him. With this goal not only did the Wings win 3-2 but this had also completed Kane’s story of returning back to Chicago.
This was a very emotional game for Patrick Kane and it meant the world to him making the final OT shot. Make sure to stay updated with Kanes rise of glory, once more, as the NHL 2023-2024 season continues.
