Madison Haddock by Mari Vande Poel
Madison Haddock is currently finishing up her senior year at Saugatuck High School.
Matty was asked where she will go to college if she is going. She said that she expects to complete her freshman year at Michigan Technological University or Northern Michigan University. Because her undergraduate will be wildlife biology, she expects to do lots of learning outdoors in rural upper Michigan. Matty sees herself researching Michigan ecosystems and animals such as birds, deer, moose, and hopefully even bears and wolves to ensure their well-being during the onset of climate change and urban development.
Next, Matty was asked what her feelings/thoughts about senior year are. She said that now that high school is over there's both lots of relief that college applications are over and stress about moving on to college. She's been mostly trying to have fun, destress, and figure out her interests this year.
Her favorite part about senior year right now is not having to worry about college prep anymore, and having mostly all of her core classes out of the way. Matty was asked what the hardest part of senior year was and responded with this: “Even though college prep and SATs are pretty much over, finding and applying for financial aid has taken a toll on my enjoyment of senior year.”
Her advice for underclassmen is to try out different sports, clubs, or extracurricular activities, even if you think they won’t be relevant to your career. Even if you “know” that you’ll do poorly, that’s not important. It’s about trying new things and meeting new people and getting out of your comfort zone. Matty says to try to have fun with it and not to worry about being the best; it’ll be helpful later.
