JV Girls Soccer Season by Abigail Tower
This year's girls soccer season came so fast, and winter sports are coming to an end. There are currently 31 girls on the team, including both the JV and the varsity players. March 11 marked the first day of official practice for the JV and the varsity girls, and next Monday the 18 is the team’s first scrimmage, at West Ottawa Public Schools at 6:30.
With Mr. Campbell stepping down from coaching, Mr. Phillips is now coaching the JV girls after fifteen years of coaching soccer, both boys and girls; his first year of coaching was a JV girls team. He also coached middle school girls and varsity boys soccer teams here at Saugatuck. Mr. Phillips is now back coaching JV girls, and continuing varsity boys
After talking to a couple of the freshmen girls on the soccer team, here's what a few of them had to say: Evelyn Meivogel, who has been playing soccer for eleven years now says: “I feel like we’re going to have a good team and it’s gonna go well; I feel like we have some work to do though.” When asking Ginny Cernugel, who has been playing for 10 years, about our scrimmage next week, she replied with: “I’m a little nervous we won’t be ready, but I’m excited to see how we work and play together. I’m excited and feel like we’ll do pretty good.”
Lily Hass, a freshman who has been playing soccer for 12 years and made varsity this year, says: “I’m nervous, but I feel excited. I feel like Coach Jim, the varsity coach, has good working strategies, and that will most definitely help our teams, both JV and varsity, throughout this season. I’m very optimistic.”
The JV girl’s soccer team is a lot like a family, the way the team plays together and communicates on and off the field really builds that relationship, making them a stronger team all around. So if you enjoy watching soccer, or want to support the team, the first game is at home against Zion Christian at 6:30 PM, see you there!
