XXXTentacian Trial by Landon A. Opipari
Acclaimed rapper, XXXTentacian’s murderers have been brought to trial. On July 18th, 2018, Jahseh Onfroy was murdered. He is most commonly known as XXXTentacian’s, and has had a controversial career. He participated in numerous violent events that have landed him in legal trouble, but on the night of his murder, he was a maturing person awaiting a trial for his past misdeeds.
The murder was an ambush, involving four people in a van that blocked Onfroy’s own vehicle from leaving a motorsports store after he withdrew money. He then left the vehicle, was shot multiple times, died, and the murderers made off with his withdrawn cash. This happened approximately 4pm on July 28th, 2018. The suspects would post pictures of what they stole to social media.
The trial started on February 7th, 2023. It revolves around the suspects and their accomplices: Trayvon Newsome, Dedrick Williams, Robert Allen, and Michael Boatwright. They have been brought to court using footage of Onfroy’s murder, in addition to DNA matching the scene. One of the members “Robert Allen, pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder and testified against his former friends” (APNews.com). This event happened August 12th, 2022, has led to division within the suspects.
Robert Allen pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm to get a 2nd degree murder charge plea deal. This put him up as a testimony against his friend’s involvement in the murder. The rest of the suspects are claiming innocence; with Boatwright’s attorney claiming the fact he searched online “accessory to murder," as a means of proving his innocence.
The closing arguments took place on March 8th, leaving it in the deliberation phase. Other witnesses called to testify during the span of the trial included: Onfroy’s past girlfriend, his uncle, and initially Drake. Drake was considered a suspect because of mentions of Onfroy in his songs. However, as a result of Robert Allen’s recollection of the event and Drake’s lawyer requesting the cancellation of his deposition, Drake was not forced to appear.
Outside of the trial, the most interesting content XXXTentacian’s fans have to look forward to are the release of new documentaries and previously unreleased music. Onfroy’s career spanned a short period, but he had enough demos and recordings to create two albums worth of at the time unreleased music in 2018 and 2019. He left a large impact online, with many grieving his loss.
