Cross Country Regionals by Natalie Tuckerman
As we approach November, many sports seasons are coming to an end. Football is done and the others are wrapping up. For Cross Country, this is a time for many competitive meets such as the SAC. Soon, Cross Country regionals will approach and, eventually, state finals. Something that not everyone might realize is that state finals are not promised to Saugatuck. It takes a lot of work by both the boys and girls teams to qualify for state finals.
To get the perspective of each Cross Country team (the boys and girls), I interviewed a runner from both teams. First, I talked to Maya Veldt who is a junior. Maya says, “The Cross Country season for us girls has been super exciting. It hasn’t been traditional because of our small numbers and no seniors. However, we are still excited to continue training with each other next year since we have no seniors to lose. We are also looking forward to getting some incoming freshmen next year who will help us out a lot.” Maya concluded that despite this year being untraditional for her, she is so proud of her team and excited to finish strong as a full team. She says ““This was a season to remember.”''.”
The next person I talked to was Charlie Stormer, who is a senior on the boys team this year.
“Well, there’s three other competitive teams: Bloomingdale, Buchanan, and Kalamazoo Christan. We’re hoping to firstly qualify the team for state and secondly win the region. But we have to race man for man and beat our guys to see what happens.” Sounds like it will be an exciting battle between 4 teams hoping to get first place at regionals. In the end, Saugatuck will prevail as they normally do.
For the girls and boys teams, let's wish them the best of luck for the rest of their season. Make sure to attend regionals at Bangor High School on October 29th.
