USWNT and Colombia Soccer Game by Mallory Hass
On Sunday, March 3rd of 2024, the US Women’s National Soccer Team played in the quarterfinal of the Concacaf W Gold Cup match against Columbia. The score of the game ended up being 3-0, with the United States winning the match. Goals were scored by captain Lindsey Horan, Jenna Nighswonger, and Jaedyn Shaw.
Horan’s goal was the result of a penalty given to a defensive Colombian player after they shoved Alex Morgan off of the ball. Horan went for the lower right side of the net and made it in successfully, making the score 1-0 in the first 13 minutes of the game. Nighswonger’s goal was made in the 22nd minute of the first half. The defender scored the 2nd goal of her international career. The assist was given by Alex Morgan after the ball was kicked long down the field. Teenager Jaedyn Shaw scored the 3rd goal of the game after Trinity Rodman placed a cross perfect enough for Shaw to one-time it into the corner of Colombia's goal during the 2nd minute of stoppage time for the first half.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made some incredible saves after Columbia placed 3 shots on goal. This, of course, is in comparison to the United States’ 6 shots on target out of a total of 18 shots for the USWNT. The United States held possession of the ball for a little under half of the time, sitting at 44%.
Overall, the game was a very intense one when looking at how physically aggressive the players were. With the first goal being scored off of a penalty kick, it is safe to say that players were not afraid to take a card. After the game, there was a bit of a face-off between 3 USWNT players and a couple players from Colombia's team. They were broken up by the referees before anything could be started, but there was certainly tension between the competitors.
With the United States taking the win in this game, they will advance to the semifinals of the Concacaf W Gold Cup. They are set to play against Canada on the 6th of March, so be sure that you don’t miss it!
