National Holidays This Week by Annika Vanderbeek
Did you know that every single day is actually a holiday? If you look it up on google, you can find a national holiday for any day! But wait, don’t look it up yet, today we will talk about what each day of this week is celebrating and why.
Sunday, February 25 is national chocolate covered nut day! Celebrate this day by purchasing or even making chocolate covered nuts for a yummy treat. Did you know that the first chocolate covered nut candy was Goobers, sold in 1925 and still sold today. Another popular chocolate covered nut candy is peanut M&Ms.
The next national holiday is national letter to an elder day, which is on Monday, February 26. So on that day, maybe write a letter to your grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, mother, father or anybody that you know that might be feeling lonely. This letter might not feel like a lot, but it could mean so much to the person on the receiving end.
National strawberry day is on Tuesday, February 27. Strawberries are my personal favorite fruit, so I am very excited about this holiday. They are the best juicy red fruit in the world, and if you’ve never had one, you better try one on Tuesday! One way you could celebrate this holiday is by making a snack that includes strawberries. For example, I like to dip strawberries in marshmallow fluff and then roast it on the oven burner. There are so many other ways to enjoy the goodness of strawberries, the possibilities are endless!
The next holiday is celebrated on Wednesday, February 28, which is national floral design day. Flowers are a beautiful thing to put on a shirt, purse, dress, tablecloth, you name it! To celebrate this holiday you can wear or use something with a floral design on it.
Here is a holiday many of you might already know; leap day! Leap day is celebrated every four years on February 29th. The reason why it is only celebrated once in four years is because February 29th actually only happens once every four years! This is because the Gregorian calendar, which we use, is not perfectly in line with the sun. But that isn’t a big problem, it can simply be fixed with one day every four years!
Friday, March 1st is national pig day! Pigs are an important part of our daily lives. Many people eat them and some people even keep them as pets! Several cartoon characters in kids shows are pigs, including Peppa Pig, Miss Piggy, Piglet, Pumbaa, and many more. Some ways you can celebrate national pig day are going to a petting zoo (only for the pigs of course), or maybe if you're not a big fan of animals you can eat some bacon, and trust me it tastes better than it sounds in this context.
On Saturday, March 2nd, it is national banana cream pie day. Banana cream pie has always been a special and delicious treat. If you haven’t tried a banana cream pie, you should definitely try one on this day! Maybe, you could even make one!
In conclusion, this really shows how each of these normal seeming days aren’t actually that boring. Each and every day that you live can be special if you make it special! So make sure you celebrate each of these holidays this week!
