College Visit Day by Maddie Klein
Last week Tuesday was College Visit Day for Saugatuck High School. Everyone scattered across the state in search of a school or university that would suit their liking. The freshman went to Southwest Community College. Sophomores went to Aquinas. Juniors and seniors could pick where they wanted to go.
Junior, Ben Schoonmaker, went to Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Ben picked the school for no particular reason, it was just where Mr. Ward and Mrs. Terhaar took a group of students. Ben is unsure of what he wants to do after high school. He is planning on attending college, but not sure what major. Ben thought that Hope College was a little expensive for what they actually are offering there.
Senior, Haley Rivera, went to Saginaw Valley State University. Saginaw Valley State University is three hours away and has the best ranked public housing. It is the most affordable out of the schools Haley wants to go to. Haley wants to go to college to major in psychology. Haley said, “I really like the school. The facilities were very well kept and the school is affordable. I also love the school colors.”
Senior, Luke Gorges, said, “I went to Kalamazoo College and I was surprised by how small they were. They have 1400 kids enrolled. I now know for sure that I can run there if I so choose. One question that I have is, how would I like the very small college experience? I went on a campus tour and we were able to look at the majority of the buildings on campus in a very short amount of time; everything was within walking distance. The campus was nice, though; it had a bunch of old buildings and seemed very nice. I can see myself there for sure, the team seems really committed and all of the people on campus are really nice and definitely care about their students.”
All of the students visited colleges in either Michigan or Indiana. The colleges visited were not all liked in particular by the students that visited them, but there is a fit for everyone.
