“SOUP-TOBER” National Honor Society Can Drive by Will Ayers
Saugatuck High School’s National Honor Society is hosting a can drive to support families within the community and offer them another source of food to help support them. The goal of the can drive is to get cans of soup and other non-perishable items that can be donated to local community members in need.
The National Honor Society is partnering with Christian Neighbors Food Pantry, an organization within the community that has a food pantry where members can get the food they need if they are in financial need or struggling to get the necessary food needed. The month of October for Christian Neighbors and NHS is “SOUP-TOBER” where the goal is to raise donations for soup cans.
In order to be a member of the National Honor Society one is required to participate in events such as these and donate food and other items throughout the year. Each member of the National Honor Society is asked to donate two cans of soup. The National Honor Society wants others to donate soup cans for the Christian Neighbors' food pantry, not just members; the goal is to get other students involved and have them donate soup cans as well.
The food drive is being held during a week-long span of Monday, October 17th to Friday, October 21st. The goal is to get all donations within this week-long span to Saugatuck High School where the cans will then be moved to the Douglas Community Church. The National Honor Society is still accepting donations within the following week from October 24th to October 28th.
Christian Neighbors is a nonprofit organization and its goal is to provide local families within a community with food, emergency financial assistance, and skill-building education to create self-sufficiency. Christian neighbors is a nationwide organization that helps those of faith and those who do not follow faith. The local Christian Neighbors food pantry is held within the Community Church of Douglas and has a large area that has food to support families within the community which includes: Douglas, Saugatuck, and Fennville area.
