New J.V. Girls Soccer Team by Neave Rewa
This spring, Saugatuck High School will for the first time have an official Junior Varsity Girls soccer team. This new addition to the already successful girls soccer program means only great things for the future of Saugatuck Public Schools.
In the entire history of the girls soccer program at Saugatuck High School, there has only ever been one varsity team. That is just one of the unfortunate limitations of a small school. This has especially become a problem in the past few years, with the roster averaging over 20 players. Having that large of a team presents many challenges for players, especially underclassmen, who found that they had minimal playing time. Unfortunately, that is the uncontrollable reality that comes along with not having a J.V. team. This year, thanks to the hard work that coaches and players have put in to further develop their program, they finally have enough numbers to create two separate teams.
The new junior varsity team creates an opportunity for players to get more playing time; therefore, further developing their skill, preparing them for varsity. Middle school girls and high school boys soccer coach Mr. Philips stated, “I’m realy excited that we have the interest and involvement to start a J.V soccer team. I think with the way things are going we are going to be able to maintain that and overall improve the team and program.”
Julia Lowery, a freshman at Saugatuck who's played soccer her entire life said she's “really excited to officially have a J.V team, and to see the future impact that it has on the team, and myself. It's also really great that girls are coming and trying out to play soccer. Overall, I'm really looking forward to being able to get more playing time and set myself up for success later in my high school career on varsity.”
Sophomore Ava Tringali also shared, “I'm looking forward to my second year in high school and being able to interact with lower classmen along with the ability to play with some upperclassmen, looking forward to getting back in the outdoors and getting on the field while also being able to enjoy my favorite sport.”
With this new opportunity, the future's looking bright for Suagtuck High School girls soccer.
