Finland Is Building A Fence At The Border To Russia by Ellen Martinsson
The Finnish Parliament agrees, a fence is needed along the border with Russia. Now, a project is to be started and the plan is to fence off as much as 416 miles of the total 2080 mile long border. Last Tuesday, the Finnish government gathered all the parties in the parliament for a security policy meeting where the fence was a big issue they discussed.
The fence is being built in a changed security situation that does not look like it will return to normal for decades, if even then, says the Finnish Minister of Interior, Krista Mikkonen in an interview about the fence.
All parties had already declared themselves in favor of a fence before the meeting, and when the Border Guard Service also expressed a need for the fence, the road to construction was clear.
“As Prime Minister, I do not question the Border Guard's view on the matter, says Sanna Marin according to Hufvudstadsbladet” (a Finnish newspaper).
They have hundreds of millions in budget and if everything goes as it should, and all decisions are decided, the fence should be ready in three to four years.
For the project, six million euros are reserved in a supplementary budget for this year, and then around 140 million for next year.
Finland is now a part of NATO and therefore went against Russia in their demand to not join NATO. They aren’t exactly friends for the moment and that's why the fence is being built.
