Upcoming Golf Season by Carter Miler
As the trimester comes to a close as well as winter sports, spring season is right around the corner. One of those sports includes golf. It has become a popular sport here at Saugatuck; due to the amount of people trying out this year, the school was forced to create a JV team. As of right now, the plan is for Mr. Smit to coach the JV team and have Mr. Ward continue to be the varsity coach.
Mr. Ward has been the coach for quite a few years now. Before Mr. Ward came along, Mr. Smit used to be the coach and was able to get them very far. The team as well as the coaches are hoping that new faces and more people will help the team succeed and get them as far as they have been able to in past years.
Junior Brighton VanHorn, who is a part of the golf team, had a few words about the team, “I have been playing golf my whole life, and am grateful I can play golf here at Saugatuck as a sport. I believe that we are going to have a great season and hopefully if not all of us, but a few of us can make it to states and put on the map.”
The team practices at the Ravines and they will sometimes go out to Clearbrook for their practices. The team tends to build very strong relationships and are able to have lots of fun at practices and golf matches.
If you enjoy golf for fun or if you just want to try something new, the golf team will be having their first practices next week, and both guys and girls are welcome. There will be tryouts to determine what team everyone will be on. So come out and have some fun!
