Saugatuck vs. Michigan Lutheran by Anders Peterson
On Tuesday, April 9, Saugatuck’s Varsity Baseball team met with Michigan Lutheran’s Varsity team at Demarest Field in Douglas. This was the first game of the season, at least for Saugatuck, and both teams gave it their all to win. Cass Stanberry was the starting pitcher, Matt Hartegrink substituted in the third inning, and Holden Burd ended off the game.
The first few innings weren’t looking good for Saugatuck, as Michigan Lutheran had three points and Saugatuck only had one run in. Saugatuck’s batters were still getting back into the flow of things, making some minor errors like swinging on a 3-0 count. They also forgot to look at the coach, Evan Czarnecki, for signs telling them what to do.
In about the third or fourth inning, Michigan Lutheran had 6 points and Saugatuck had a long way to go with 2. But luckily for Saugatuck, Michigan Lutheran had to pull their starting pitcher because he reached the pitch limit and couldn’t throw anymore. Michigan Lutheran’s backup pitchers weren’t nearly as good, to say the least. Saugatuck was catching up during the middle of the game, ending the fifth inning with a score of 5-6.
The sixth and final inning was when Michigan Lutheran’s third pitcher was brought in.
There were many walks, and because of how long the game was going, the fielders were making more mistakes. The catcher couldn’t work with the throws the pitcher was giving him, allowing even the slowest guys on Saugatuck to steal on almost every pitch. Even though the players in the dugout had lost hope when they were down 4 points, Saugatuck got the lead and did not stop. Saugatuck runners were stealing bases constantly, they were learning from their past batting mistakes, and were scoring points left and right.
The final score was: Saugatuck: 15 and Michigan Lutheran: 6. Up until this game, Saugatuck’s Varsity Baseball team had lost the first game of the season for three years in a row, so it was nice to see that change. Everyone involved had a great time, and hopefully Saugatuck continues to win games like this in the future.
