End Of JV Girls Basketball Season by Maggie Loomis
This past Thursday, the JV Girls basketball team finished off their season with a win against Constantine. The girls had 13 players this year, including: five returning sophomores, six freshmen, and two completely new players. The girls had a pretty good season with a record of 8-9, spanning over 4 months.
This year at the JV level, two new coaches were introduced. As the girls said bye to their previous coach, Coach Burch, they welcomed their new head and assistant coaches: Coach O and Coach Mint. These coaches both had a past with basketball. They were an excellent new addition to the basketball family. The JV coaches prioritized family, and how we treat and take care of each other, over victory. They believed that basketball went beyond wins and losses, but it was learning to build strong bonds and treat others well.
This year, the girls did well against local rivals/competitors, Black River, Fennville, and Gobles. They played each of these teams twice throughout the span of their season. Against all three teams, they took the victory both times. Against Gobles JV girls, the games were close, Saugatuck winning by under 10 both times. Against Black River, the girls did really well, they won by around 20 points both times. Lastly, against Fennville, the girls excelled more winning by 15-30 points both times!
Although the girls had a good basketball season, they also built strong friendships. They built friendships that are active on and off the court. Building a family helped lead them to some of their success, and had long term benefits outside of the season. Creating strong relationships with each other and with their coaches, made it a fun season for the girls. As some of the girls move up to the varsity level next year, the JV girls 2024-2025 team is bound to look different, but hopefully the same sense of community and family will prevail. The incoming freshman next year will change the JV’s team dynamic, as they are all their own unique players, but nonetheless it is likely that the team will be successful again.
