Hope vs Calvin Volleyball Game by Ellen Martinsen
On Friday, October 21, Saugatuck's Middle school’s JV and Varsity volleyball teams drove the 20 minutes drive to Hope College to watch the Hope Varsity Volleyball team play their rivals, Calvin University.
Hope college, who is ranked 17th, lost all their 3 sets to the third ranked Calvin University. The result of the game was understandable and not that surprising. Hope got defeated with the scores 25-15, 25-12, and 25-19.
Even though they lost, which most people were expecting, they still had a huge crowd there supporting them and an amazing student section. “This crowd was absolutely incredible,” head coach Becky Schmidt said, according to the Hope College Athletics side. The game was played in front of a crowd of almost 3000 people.
“This was my first time going to a game like this and it was so fun. Both the Calvin and Hope student sections were amazing. Entering the gym to see the Hope student section was incredible, but then when Calvin’s student section got bigger and bigger, I was shocked. All the school spirit, I love it! I think that Calvin’s student section was bigger and better than the Hope section, even though Calvin was the away team and Hope the home team,.” Chiara said when being asked what she thought about the game. She also said that both teams played really well and that watching volleyball on that level in real life is exciting and inspiring.
The statistics from the game show pretty clearly which team was better. Hope got 25 kills, to Calvins 45 kills. Calvin’s hitting was .294 and Hope had a .083. Blocks were pretty close, Hope had 6 and Calvin 7. Calvin also got 6 aces to Hopes 2.
The game was pretty intense, especially the last set. And it was so much fun to watch. Both the team and the student section made it great. Going to the game you even got to witness a gorilla chasing a banana around the gym and up and down the stairs. Like, who wouldn't want to see that?
