Senior Night and Pink Out Game for Volleyball! by Haley Rivera
Tuesday night, the seniors were honored before their quad against Black River, Eau Claire, and Zion Christian. There are seven seniors on the Girls Varsity Volleyball team this season: Haley Rivera, Erin Moerler, Alyssa Ries, Trinity Stygstra, Daniela Nkurunziza, Caralyn Doucette, and Eva Kierzek. The seniors were escorted onto the gym floor Tuesday night, prior to the game, by their parents.
Erin Moerler, a senior, was somewhat emotional when she was asked to talk about how she felt prior to her senior night, “Obviously I am excited to play on senior night and have the whole experience, but it's definitely a bittersweet moment. I am excited to move onto these other chapters in my life, but I will definitely miss playing with my other seniors and the underclassmen. For some of these girls, I have been playing multiple sports with them since I was just in recreational sports. Knowing that that will be coming to an end soon makes me super emotional. Volleyball has been such an important part of my life, and I don’t want to believe that it’s coming to an end soon.”
When asked a similar question, Daniela Nkurunziza said, “I really enjoyed being a part of the team because it was a new experience for me. I also enjoyed the connection everyone had on the team. I think Coach Austin had a great coaching philosophy and that really made the season have a better experience for me. I appreciate that she's always giving us all of her effort.”
This was a memorable night for all of the seniors and their families as it marks a very important milestone in their high school athletic careers. For some athletes, they only play volleyball, and this is their one night to be recognized as a senior athlete.
That game was not only special for the seniors that night, but Tuesday night's game was also designated the Pink Out game. At this game, spectators were encouraged to wear the color pink to show their support and raise awareness for individuals and families who were affected by the negative effects of breast cancer. The student section also showed their support for the seniors and breast cancer awareness by coming to the game dressed in a variety of pink clothing and accessories.
