Tennessee Beats Alabama Football by Mazie Robison
For the first time since 2006, Tennessee has beaten Alabama's football team. The final score of the game was 49 to 52. The teams were both undefeated until this game. Volunteer kicker Chase McGrath made the game-winning kick as time ran out. With the game tied 49-49 in the fourth quarter, Young zipped Alabama down the field and seemingly had the Tide in a position to win on a game-winning field goal. However, the kicker Will Reichard missed his 50-yard attempt to the right, leaving the game tied with 15 seconds left.
After Tennessee won on Saturday night, fans stormed the field and carried away both goalposts before dumping them in the Tennessee River. Tennessee posted on their social media Sunday that they are raising money it says will go toward the purchase of new goalposts. “There's an option for a $16 donation, which is the number of years it had been since the Vols beat rival Alabama; a $52.49 donation, which plays off the final score of the game; and a $1,019.15 donation, which is a nod to the sold-out crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium,” says Danny White.
As of midnight Sunday, more than $67,000 had been raised, which is 45% of the goal. "We thought this was a fun way to invite Vol Nation to continue in the celebration," athletic director Danny White told ESPN. "We had heard before and during the game that the fans would support a celebration, no matter the cost, so we leaned into that enthusiasm."
But even that falls short of another tab Tennessee will need to pay soon. On Sunday, the SEC fined the school $100,000 because fans were allowed on the field after the upset win.
