This past week Michigan got hit with a huge snowstorm which brought tons of snow as well as strong winds. A fun activity that might be useful in this type of weather is sledding! Especially in the Saugatuck/Douglas area, tons of hills are available to everyone, such as Schultz Park, Oval Beach, or even someone’s backyard. This has been an activity that people have been doing for years and there is lots to know about it.
Sledding can be traced back thousands of years. However, they didn’t have the modern sleds that people use today. They had wooden sleds that were not as safe as the plastic ones that you would buy from the store. With the winds that came with this winter storm, you would be able to reach high speeds with the wind pushing you which makes it even more fun. Not only is it a fun activity that you can do with family and friends, but it is also a great workout. You have to use your strength to hold yourself up on the sled as well as guide yourself down the hill to make sure you don’t run into something. It isn’t unlikely to wake up the next morning with your arms and abs aching.
