Dominican Republic Trip by Benny Majer
After the Interact Club’s Trip to the Dominican Republic, which was meant to happen 2 weeks ago, was delayed, the group will finally leave this week. In this Article you’ll find out more about why they’re going to the Dominican Republic, who’s going and when they’re going.
Every other year Saugatuck's Interact Club flies out to the Dominican Republic for a week to work on volunteer projects; for example, two years ago they went there to build the foundation for a playground.
They were supposed to leave two weeks ago, but due to a lot of snow on the day of the flight their trip unfortunately was canceled and they had to look for a new flight. The next best date for them to fly was this week Friday, January 26th. So now, two weeks later, they'll hopefully finally be able to leave.
To find out more about this year's trip I interviewed Cameron Lewis, one of the students who’s going to leave this friday. First I asked him for how long they’re leaving, and it turns out that they’ll leave Friday morning and return late Wednesday, January 31stst. He told me that for this year’s project, they’ll pour cement for a floor in a school, as well as do some painting and anything else needed. I asked if they’ll do anything besides that, and his answer was, “The first thing we’ll do is have a beach day. We usually do that as a reward on the last day, but this year we’re going to do it first.” The food is really good over there, he told me. It’s primarily rice, beans, meat and really good fresh fruits. Also, Cameron told me that due to the bunch of sugar they produce there, they have really good sweets. The best food he had in the Dominican Republic was a cake called “Bizcocho” cake which is a very light and airy traditionally Dominican cake with a sweet filling.
Cameron told me that they only do this trip every other year. He went on this trip two years ago and unhappily won’t be able to go again since he’s graduating next year. Still, he would definitely recommend going on this trip to everybody who has a chance to do so.
