Daniela Nkurunziza by Sage Larsen
Daniela is a foreign exchange student this year from Germany and is currently staying with Elsa Nor and her family. Daniela played volleyball, basketball, and is playing soccer this spring.
When Daniela was asked what advice she would give to underclassmen she said: “Take it easy and enjoy your days as a freshman.” Daniela is 16 years old and is really enjoying her time here. Although she is a junior, Daniela will still get to walk at graduation and participate in senior activities because she is an exchange student.
When Daniela graduates high school she would like to go to college and study medicine to be a surgeon. She likes helping people and thinks surgery is really cool. Daniela still has a few years of school left, so she still has some time to decide where she wants to go to college.
High school sports are a really important part of high school for some people. Sports create bonds and help people make new friends. Playing sports or doing extra curricular activities can also be a help to get into a college. Daniela said her favorite sport was basketball; she got to make new friends and play with her host sister. Daniela said: “I played it in Germany when I was younger and I just fell in love with it since then, even though I stopped playing it. I really liked playing JV along with varsity. It was a fun experience. I made new friends and I got close to some of them, which was really nice!”
When Daniela was asked what her favorite thing about the American school system was she said: “I like how you can do sports with your friends and the people here. It’s so different from Germany.” Daniela attended many football and boys basketball games, and she participated in spirit weeks.
Even though Daniela will not be here next year, make sure you say hi! Also, make sure to wish her good luck with her plans and hope her soccer season goes well.
