Managing Multiple APs, Clubs, etc. with Layla Vinten-Johansen and Lilliana Aumaugher by Sophie Kupres
Lilliana Augmaugher and Layla Vinten-Johansen, Juniors this year, are both involved in numerous AP Classes, clubs, sports, extracurricular activities, etc. As they have both been taking on such a workload for a few years now, they’ve gotten pretty good at managing it.
Lilliana is taking Jazz Band, AP Art Portfolio, AP U.S. History, AP Literature and Composition, Band, and Pre-Calculus. In addition to these, she also co-leads two clubs: Cooking Club and World Cultures Club. In her free time, she tutors, babysits, takes piano lessons, does taekwondo, plays softball, is in quiz bowl, and is in NHS/NAHS.
Layla is in AP Art Portfolio, AP U.S. History, and AP Literature and Composition as well. Layla also plays the violin and piano (shoutout to Nyla Hensley!), has joined Quiz Bowl, co-leads World Cultures Club with Lilliana, and is in NHS/NAHS. She also has a PBL class for fiddling, which stands for Project-Based Learning.
Project Based Learning, or PBL, is a relatively new program and has been around for the past few years. When asked for a basic description of what the class entails, Layla described it as an independent study class, but with the help of a community partner. Students could do pretty much anything from woodworking to ballet, music, cooking classes, etc. In Layla’s case, she is paired with Keala Venema from MAFM (Michigan Academy of Folk Music), who teaches her fiddling. So, every day during 5th hour, she gets time to practice and work on her music in one of the band’s practice rooms.
Both Lilliana and Layla are quite driven to be involved in so much. However, they stated that they simply like the challenge brought by things such as AP classes. They also enjoy how fun AP classes can be, and the college credits they can earn! Both of them have also been on track for more advanced classes for a few years now, and they enjoy continuing to challenge themselves and seeing how far they can get.
As Lilliana and Layla are involved in many advanced classes and extracurricular activities, there’s obviously quite a workload that comes with it! When asked how they managed time and distributed it among classes, they both had some pretty good strategies.
Layla likes to have a sticky note on her computer of tasks she needs to get done, similar to a planner. She also aims to get to sleep at a decent time every night and makes sure to build in time for herself to get everything done that she needs to. Lilliana agrees with this, and values managing time and staying organized. When asked if either of them had advice to others on how to manage time and schoolwork, they recommended learning how to prioritize assignments, and knowing how much time is needed to get an assignment done. Both of them also stressed slowly building up one’s workload. For example, maybe start with one AP class at first, and then take two the next year, and so on. The same can be applied to extracurriculars and things of that nature.
