Changes to Girls’ Soccer at Saugatuck by Mallory Hass
As many people have become aware, Mr. Campbell will sadly not be returning to coach the Saugatuck High School girls’ varsity soccer team for the 2024 season. However, Jim Theis, a local coach, has stepped into his role. Coach Theis has coached numerous sports around the Holland area, most of which were girls soccer teams. Coach Theis says that the biggest priority of his for the upcoming season is for them to have fun. He has coached for many different teams under the United Soccer Athletes Club (USA) based out of Zeeland. Coach Theis says that he isn’t sure of which formation he will be using for this season, but he is open to many different ideas. It seems to be like he can’t wait to get to know the players better and see what they bring to the table!
Coach Theis is already preparing the girls for a successful season this year. He is encouraging his players to participate in both individual and team pre-season conditioning. Seeing that many of the athletes at Saugatuck are multiple-sport athletes, several of the girls will have no need to participate in these training sessions, as they are already playing another sport.
Having coached middle school girls’ soccer as well as boys’ varsity soccer, Mr. Phillips, a middle school English teacher at Saugatuck, is prepared to be a stellar junior varsity soccer coach for the girls’ season this spring. Stepping into his role as the girls middle school coach is Nate Holley, a well-known civilian of Saugatuck. He has 3 children who are enrolled in the school system and lots of experience coaching their sports, including soccer.
The Saugatuck girls soccer team has had a very successful last few seasons and they are expecting to have many more to follow. They lost lots of valuable seniors after last season, but many talented freshmen are stepping up to fill their spots.
We can’t wait to see what this year’s girls’ soccer teams have to offer and hope to see you at the games!
