Chiara is living with the Ihle family. She has a host mother Mary and a host father Dave, a younger host sister named Zuzu and two older host brothers. Knole is nineteen and Clay is twenty-one. Knole is studying at Depauw College in Indiana and Clay is studying at Hope College here in Holland.
Chiara’s normal day of school at Saugatuck High School looks soemthing like this:First of all she wakes up at around 7a.m. After that she has breakfast; usually she eats bagels and drinks orange juice. At around 7:45 Chiara’s host mum Mary gives her a ride to school. She arrives everyday at around 8AM where me and Anna, another exchange student, are meeting her at our lockers.
Chiara’s first hour begins at 8:30 AM Her first hour is English 11 A with Mr. Shaw.Second hour is U.S History with Ms. TerHarr. In the third hour she has Mrs. Baumann and the class Video production. After lunch she has Biology A with Mr. Smit and finally the fifth hour is Journalism with Ms. Lewis. School for her ends at 3:15p.m.
Following school she has volleyball practice with the JV team . Her practice lasts until 5:30PM. Afterwards, Chiara told me that her host mother pick her up. I asked Chiara how she likes her school and she said that’s a total difference to her school back in Italy, especially in how people dress at school.
When she gets home she usually does her homework and plays with her ten years old sister. At around 6:30PM the whole family eats dinner. At night Chiara watches Netflix or is studying in her room.
On weekends she sleeps in and goes on trips, goes out to eat ice cream, watches Zuzu's soccer games, or just goes downtown. She even went to Saugatuck Dune Rides with her host family. Chiara also calls her family back in Italy on weekends to talk to them once a week.
