2024 Girls Soccer Season by Charlotte Gardner
It is only a couple more weeks until the first practice for the Saugatuck girl's soccer team. Last year was a very successful season for them. They accomplished a lot, as well as setting new school records. It will be an exciting season to see if they will be able to accomplish just as much or even more. This season is going to be a little different due to coach Campbell stepping down, and new coach Jim Theis stepping in. The girls have been conditioning and getting ball work in to help gear them up for the first practice. Their first weeks of games will be their hardest; therefore, they have to be prepared and make sure they are in shape and ready to play.
To get more of a personal feel, junior Ava Triangli, who is on the soccer team, was asked a few questions.
What are you looking forward to this season? “This year I am looking forward to coming back and hoping to maintain our current status in the district and coming back strong if not stronger.”
What are your thoughts on the new coach? “I was fortunate to have the opportunity to play on his indoor team. I think he is an educated coach and he has a lot of time and soccer ability under his belt. Change is difficult for everyone, but this is a great opportunity for everyone and there is a lot to look forward to.”
What is your favorite thing about soccer? “The team aspect and being able to work together and work toward a common goal, as well as being able to be with my friends after school; and winning always feels good!”
Cam Lewis, who is also a junior, is a player on the boys’ varsity team and plans on attending the girl’s games this spring, and he was asked a few questions.
Will you attend some games this season? “I would like to come watch some games, I probably won’t go to any away games, but I will be at a few home games.”
Do you enjoy watching girls' soccer games? “I’m gonna be honest, I haven’t been to one yet, but I have heard since we’re pretty good that they will be fun to watch.”
In a battle between the boys' and girls soccer teams, who do you think would win? “The boys.”
Overall, it will be an exciting spring and there is a lot to come for the soccer program, not only because of the new coach but also because of the new high school students. Come out to the games and if you are interested in playing soccer, it is a fun experience you should come out to be a part of the team on March 11th!
