Leafs vs. Bruins by Nova DeGraaf
Many teams that go up against each other have only one thing in common when playing: the desire to win. That ideal is no different for this week's intense lineup of games.
This past Monday, January 22, 2024, a game of the greats had occurred. The NHL’s top two leading teams for point percentage, the Winnipeg Jets and the Boston Bruins, geared up to face off and see who really was one of the best leading teams in the league.
In the first period, the Bruins came out very strong, getting the first goal. With a long pass at the top of the defensive zone from forward Trent Frederic, the puck made its way down into the slot. After being passed to several people, Jakub Luako was then able to get possession of the puck where he then shot it right into the goal. On a fast breakaway from the Jets, it was quickly passed up to the very top of the offensive zone where defenseman Dlyan DeMelo took a long shot right into the net. This was one of DeMelos first goals in 43 games. With almost a minute left in the first, the Bruins are still eager to go. After many passes around the net to find an opening, the puck slid to Charlie Coyle who was right at the net, ready to shoot it in. Making a purposeful shot into the bottom left corner of the net, the Bruins got their second goal of the game. The ending score of the first period was 1-2, Boston Bruins leading.
In the second period, the Bruins began taking more and more shots on the goal; however, goalie Connor Hellebuyck was not willing to let the Bruins take an even bigger lead. Both teams continued exchanging shots until the final minute led them into the next period. The score had not changed this period, still being 1-2 with the Bruins in the lead.
In the third period, only a couple minutes in and the Bruins are looking for more than 2 goals. After stealing the puck away from the jets, the Bruins woke quickly to get the puck into center ice in front of the goal. This set them up perfectly for Jake DeBrusk to make a pop up into the net giving the Bruins their 3rd point of the game. The Bruins didn’t stop after that though, they only continued their parade of goals. After a short face off, the Bruins got possession of the puck. At this time, the Jets didn’t have a goalie in the goal because they wanted to give a last minute effort to try and shorten the point gap. Once the Bruins had the puck however, they passed it to forward Brad Marchand, who stormed right to the empty goal to finish the game off. The Boston Bruins inevitably took this game home with the final score bening 1-4.
This game clearly shows the Boston Bruins strength. Will they keep this up as we are slowly making our way into the playoffs? Keep in touch with the Boston Bruins next game to see if they will continue their point streak as they go up against the Carolina Hurricanes.
