Pop Or Country? by Chloe Carney
In the diverse landscape of music, pop and country genres stand as distinct pillars, each with their own unique storytelling methods and cultural influences. Pop music, with its catchy melodies and broad appeal, often captures the essence of contemporary life and its complexities. Country music, on the other hand, offers a more traditional acoustic sound that’s deeply rooted in the narratives of everyday people and their experiences. Despite their differences, both genres have the power to unite listeners through the universal language of music. Because of this, I interviewed 3 different teachers to see if they would rather listen to country or pop, why they think this way, and what their favorite artist from that genre would be.
First, I asked Mr. Green. He is the high school Civics, Economics, and Journalism teacher. He said if he had to choose between the two genres, he would go with country and his favorite artist would be Johnny Cash. However, he would rather listen to rock or rap over either country or pop.
Next, I asked Mrs. Grinzinger, who is the middle school Science and high school Chemistry teacher. She said between the two different genres, she likes both but tends to listen to pop more. She says she likes Taylor Swift, which is a great artist for this question considering she makes both country and pop music. She said despite liking Taylor Swift, she used to listen to Justin Timberlake as well.
I then asked Mrs. Prutch, who is the middle school Language Arts teacher. She said even though some country music is ok depending on the song and artist, she loves pop music more. She says that some country music can be silly and not as fun to dance, sing, and have a good time with as it is with pop. She also stated her kids love Taylor Swift, so she eventually loved her as well. She would be her favorite artist. She also saw her at the Eras Tour with her daughters in Detroit this summer and said it was amazing to see her girls singing and screaming to their icon, making it one of the best memories of her life.
Finally, I asked Mrs. Bauer. She is the middle and high school Spanish teacher, as well as the Track coach. She says she likes both country and pop, but has been a bit separated from the country genre for a while. She said she prefers pop because the genre is versatile, and is better for dancing. She stated she comes from an urban background so she likes more of the old school hip-hop and rap too. She also said she has many favorite artists to choose from. In the pop genre, she likes throwbacks such as Mariah Carey and Nelly, as well as Ed Sheeran.
