Aidan Gallagher’s Work As a UN Ambassador by Aiden Zylman
Aidan Gallagher is an actor, musician, and UN Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador from and for North America. He was the youngest UN ambassador in 2018 at the age of 14, born September 18, 2003.
Aidan is a youth advocate for the United Nations Environment Programme, WildAid, Sea Legacy, Oceanic Preservation Society, and Vulcan Productions. His seventeen (17) goals for being a UN ambassador are to end poverty in all its forms, zero hunger, health, education, gender equality and women’s empowerment, water and sanitation, clean and affordable energy, economic growth, infrastructure and industrialization, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, sustainable consumption and production, climate action, life below water, biodiversity, peace and justice, and partnerships for the goals. However, Aidan specifically focuses on goal #13:climate action.
Aidan wants to use his celebrity status as an actor and musician to help influence young people and spread awareness about oceans and critical environmental issues. One of his works includes a partnership with Envision Racing in 2021 called @TreesWithAidan with the goal to inspire one million climate action pledges for which Envision Racing will plant one million trees. Major groups the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) focuses on include climate action, nature action, and chemical and pollution action.
When the UNEP asked Aidan about the increasing conversation about these environmental issues, Aidan replied, “Part of that is because of issues I’ve tried to promote, and part of that is because we are approaching an increasingly irreversible future.” He also states, “People go into denial when their reality is too scary to deal with. We’re either headed towards a beautiful future or something difficult, and it is up to the world to choose. It’s not entirely hopeless. In fact, it could be an amazing future. But it won’t be unless everyone does something about it. Our leaders should take care of this for us but unfortunately, they have shown us they won’t, at least in the accelerated time frame that all scientists say we need. So it is up to individuals to fight to keep them in check and to make sure they are the voice of the people and working in [our] best interest.”
Aidan encourages even the smallest actions such as not eating meat for a day or two and educating yourself better on the environment. Cutting meat for one day a week can immensely cut your carbon footprint. It makes a difference! Planet or plastic? It’s time for you to decide and make a change.
