Senioritis? by Andre R.K.
So we all know that senioritis is, basically being lazy and not wanting to do your work, but why exactly? What really causes senioritis and what is it all about?
Many seem to believe that senioritis is more of a made-up thing used as an excuse to get out of things easier. However, senioritis is really a thing and it's mainly caused by stress. That stress mainly comes from school, having to apply to college, and filling out the FAFSA, but it can also be from work and sports.
What is senioritis? An academic advisor at SNHU defines it as, “Seeing the finish line and realizing you don’t necessarily have to work as hard anymore to reach it.” This simply means that since seniors can see and know they are going to graduate in a matter of months, they simply give up on putting effort into schoolwork. Senioritis is most noticeable when students start to procrastinate majorly, skip classes, and even just give up on doing the work since they already have an A. Research done by Omniscient even shows that every year nationally, 78% of seniors reported having senioritis. A factor that is unforgettable is the pandemic; due to the pandemic, senioritis has been rising to an all time high. It is causing more students to skip class or even miss class due to being quarantined.
To combat senioritis, research suggests reminding oneself of the goal or what they are working towards. This may be graduating and getting into a good college or the workforce. Whichever it may be, you need to remind yourself of that. They also suggest staying organized and having a schedule. That way one can keep on track and don't avoid doing things as much. Taking breaks frequently to allow the mind to rest is also a good idea. Meditation or other forms of relaxation are great as they ease the mind and give a fresh “restart”.
Seniors: stay safe, stay organized, and let’s fight that senioritis!
