Jv Girls Basketball Season Recap by Maggie Loomis
Just this last week, the Jv girl's 2023 season came to an end. Their season ended with a record of 10-10. The team finished out their season with an away game at Black River High School, which was a battle for the girls. Although the team ended up losing, they were very proud of their season.
The Saugatuck Jv girl's team is coached by Chad Burch. Coach Burch was an excellent coach this season. He displayed many respectable qualities that a coach should have. When Interviewing him on his thoughts of the difference between a good coach and a great coach, he said: “Good coaches are positive; great coaches have positive passion. Good coaches have strong beliefs; great coaches are believed.” This very powerful quote displays some of his passion for coaching as well as showing that he truly knows what it means to be a great coach.
The girl's express that they have built a strong bond this season; their team dynamic helped them work well together on the court. Some of their major achievements for the season include beating their local rivals, as they beat Fennville’s Jv girls' basketball team a total of two times this season. They also beat Gobles Jv girl's team twice this season. These were both very fulfilling victories for the team. When interviewing Sage Larsen, the team's captain, she was asked about the team dynamic: “I think this team had a lot more chemistry than the year before. I believe that is one of the main reasons we have performed as well as we did. I also think being able to have fun at practice made the season less stressful.”
The Jv girls improved tremendously throughout the season, but racking up the award of most improved was starting point guard, Avery Smith. Their MVP for the 2023 season was Kailee Sisson, with 148 points. Kailee Sisson was their leader in free throws, fouls, and three-pointers. Although these players were recognized, all of the players were crucial to the team's success.
Every player has their own strengths and weaknesses and this group of girls just worked really well together to create a fun team dynamic. During an interview with Lexi Stoin, a freshman on the team, she reinforces this idea: “This team is truly the reason the season was so fun. Going into the season I was only close with two people on the team, but at the end of the season, I was close with everybody. We developed a sense of comfort which allowed us to have a lot of fun together. We could joke with each other and even with our coach. The team bond we created is really different from previous years. It just made the season feel stress free and fun. We even made weightlifting fun and truly enjoyed every practice.” During this interview Lexi Stoin strongly reinforced these ideas and their important impact on the season. It sounds like the Jv girls had a fun and successful season. Great season girls!
