The New Guiness World Record For The Oldest Dog Ever Suspended by Kamryn Sixberry
What was according to the Guiness World Record the oldest dog ever in February of 2023 was a dog named Bobi. Bobi was a supposed 31 year old dog who lived in Portugal in the village of Conqueiros, living with his owner Leonel Costa. Bobi was said to be born May 11, 1992. He was announced as the world’s oldest dog that was living and the oldest dog ever. He was registered by the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria and verified by a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and managed by the National Union of Veterinarians. Bobi sadly died on October 20, 2023 in an animal hospital.
Unfortunately, during a review The Guinness Book of World Records suspended the title of ‘oldest dog ever’ from the dog along with the title of ‘oldest living dog’ until further inspection. This review was being done after a decent amount of both veterinarians and other professionals questioned Bobi’s actual age. Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, this dog breed has a life expectancy to live to the ages of around 10 years old to 14 years old. This would mean that Bobi would be suspected to have lived 17 years over his expected life expectancy.
The Guiness Books of World Records has decided to suspend both of Bobi’s titles until they further undergo an examination and a review of the dog’s records. By exact words they told the Associated Press “While our review is ongoing we have decided to temporarily pause both record titles for oldest living dog and oldest dog ever until all our findings are in place” by email on Tuesday, January 16th.
Bobi’s owner defended the titles saying that the Guinness Book of World Records already spent a year checking the claims to make sure the dog was as old as he was claimed to be before giving Bobi the titles of ‘World’s Oldest Dog Ever’ and ‘The Oldest Living Dog’.
