The Rescheduled Interact Trip by Mallory Hass
Originally, the Saugatuck Interact Club’s group of 25 travelers were planning to fly to La Romana in the Dominican Republic for their semi-annual service trip early Saturday morning, the 13th of January. The weather, however, had different plans.
As meteorologists were predicting upwards of 13 inches of snow, the proctors of the club at Saugatuck, Ms. Lewis and Mr. Shaw, were scrambling to figure out whether or not they were going to make it into the DR with the flights that they had booked. The group was planning to leave Saugatuck High School at 3 in the morning in order to make the takeoff time of their flight to Detroit at 5:45. Right around this time was the forecasted height of the storm. Winds were predicted to reach up to 40 miles per hour, and temperatures were expected to be sub-twenty. Snow was also forecasted to be falling all throughout the weekend, which would allow for very poor visibility when traveling.
It was decided on Thursday night that the club’s trip would have to be rescheduled to the 26th-31st of January, only two weeks away. Though this was not ideal, Delta was able to move all passengers to a flight from Grand Rapids to Atlanta, Georgia, instead. The Grand Rapids airport ended up canceling the flight that the club was supposed to be traveling on. This made it clear that the decision to postpone the trip was, indeed, the right course of action. Saugatuck was closed on Friday as well, due to inclement weather, which paved the way for the cancellation of the club’s original plans.
Though members of the club are disappointed in the postponement of their trip, they are relieved that the trip was not canceled altogether. On the bright side, with the trip being pushed back, members of the club actually don’t end up missing any more days of school than they were already planned to. Plus, their first flight out of Grand Rapids is a little later in the morning, so they won’t have to be waking up quite as early.
We wish the club safe travels and a successful trip to the Dominican Republic in a couple days!
