Winter Sports Season by Elsa Dean
As volleyball, football, and cross country approach their final competitions, the fall sports season is coming to an end. While this is bittersweet for the athletes and the spectators, especially the seniors. The fall season is almost over, which means the winter season is almost here! Girls’ and boys’ basketball, as well as bowling, will start practicing soon, with many athletes already conditioning. Saugatuck even has a new E-sports team in the works, thanks to the senior seminar class.
Basketball is one of the most exciting sports to watch, and many are excited about this year's season. Will Ayer’s had this to say about this year's season: “I’m really excited for the upcoming basketball season. We get to play as a team this year and we all have really good chemistry when it comes to basketball. Even though I’m the only senior, I feel really connected with a lot of the younger players and I’m excited to see where the season takes us. I’m hoping that we can possibly win regionals and go even further.” We have a very talented lineup of athletes playing basketball this year, and it is sure to be a fun season. The first game is away at Bridgeman, on Tuesday, December 6th. The first home game is Friday, December 9th, against Gobles. The student section is sure to be packed, so mark your calendars!
The bowling team will begin practicing at Alley’s in Doulas soon. The athletes are excited to start practicing and competing. Senior Nathan Schaefer says: “I’m really excited for this year because we have all really improved but there is a big gap to fill with Joe Quinn leaving, now we as a team have to figure out the best option for the 5th member of the varsity team.” Mrs. Vasquez will be the new coach, taking Ms. Marcusse’s spot.
New this year is the E-Sports team! They are starting strong, with 27 athletes, and 3 of those players are in the top 10% of Rocket League players! Rocket League is one of the games that the E-Sports team will be competing in.
If you see any winter athletes around, wish them luck on what is sure to be an exciting season!
