JV Boys Basketball Season Opener by Lance Oczepek
The Saugatuck boys basketball team kicked off their season last week with some exciting matchups. For the first couple of games, Saugatuck will be playing some pretty tough teams such as Hopkins and South Haven, who are both a lot bigger than Saugatuck. Hopkins and South Haven are both Division 2, and Saugatuck is Division 4. The difference in division means that Hopkins and South Haven are both bigger and have more students than Saugatuck. With more students, the coaches are able to pick and choose who makes the team and usually will fill their JV teams with more physically mature sophomores. The Saugatuck JV team has many freshmen, which can be a disadvantage at times because of their size. The JV team plays Gobles on December 7th and Gobles will be the first Division 4 team that Saugatuck will play.
Saugatuck’s JV team had their first home game on Tuesday and lost to Bridgman in an exciting matchup. Just before the game was done, sophomore Sammy Gamboa and freshman Walt Bos both hit three-pointers in an attempt to come back and win. Other efforts by Jordan Hoshor and Caiden Pearson have helped with shots and layups down low. This year Saugatuck has been struggling with rebounding, which is when someone retrieves the ball after a player misses a shot. The team has been working on their rebounding in practice and is making steady improvements. Moving forward, Saugatuck also needs to work on getting fewer turnovers and making mistakes that could be easily avoided. As a member of the Saugatuck boys JV team myself, we definitely have some improving to do. We have the potential to be good, but just getting all the things that we do in practice to work on the court is a struggle. Breaking a press is a lot different in practice than it is in a game.
The support that the basketball teams have been receiving from the fans has been great in the first couple of games. Fans have been traveling to the away games to see both the JV and the Varsity teams play. Saugatuck may have some improving to do, but it's great to see the support for the teams is still at a high.
