Mrs. Prutch by Abby Neuens
Mrs. Prutch is the sixth grade language arts teacher for Saugatuck Public Schools, and she has undoubtedly made a difference in the lives of many students who have taken her class. She’s an incredible teacher who has been at Saugatuck for thirteen out of her twenty-two years of teaching.
She said she always thought she was going to be a lawyer, but Saugatuck sure is glad she decided to become a teacher instead, as she is great at her job and truly seems to teach. When asked to reveal her favorite thing about teaching, she said, “I love teaching about books and writing, because those are two things I love to do, so it feels good when kids find a love for reading and writing as well.” She is passionate about helping kids find their own love for language arts.
Surprisingly, when asked if she enjoyed teaching the rowdy sixth graders, she answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!”. When asked to expand on her answer, she said, “They aren’t like babies like the elementary kids, they’re independent, but not too independent. They’re still dependent enough to want to please their teachers.” She seems to be called to teach sixth graders, as she’s only spent two out of her twenty-two years teaching other grades. She spent one year with seventh graders and another with eighth graders, but ultimately came back to the sixth grade. She is made for the sixth graders with her kind and helpful personality.
In short, Mrs. Prutch is a perfect sixth grade teacher, and Saugatuck definitely made the right decision in hiring her thirteen years ago. She is the perfect person to help new middle schoolers transition from their carefree years at Douglas Elementary to their more stressful and trying years at the Saugatuck Middle/High School.
