Girls Basketball Falls to Kent City in Regionals by Caralyn Doucette
This past week the girls varsity basketball team started districts, which were hosted by North Muskegon. The first matchup took place on Wednesday, March 1st, where the girls won a close battle against Black River, advancing to district finals to play West Michigan Christian the following Friday. That week ended on a good note with a very special district win, being the first since 2004.
In an interview with senior Haley Rivera, she said: “I am super thrilled that our team was able to make district finals to begin with but, to then have us win was incredible. We knew that the team we played was going to be a tough matchup and you could tell from the first few minutes in the game that we had what it would take to overcome them.” Haley also stated that she is excited about having had the opportunity to play in regionals and thinks having the whole school and community there to support us was a special moment.
Saugatuck’s exchange student, Ellen Martinsson, also stated how excited she was about winning districts. She stated that her favorite part of the whole game was the last two minutes when Saugatuck was guaranteed to win and how special it was to have won a district for her year here.
On Tuesday, March 7th, the girls traveled to Shelby to take on Kent City in their first regional game. Unfortunately, the outcome did not go as hoped for, but the girls continued to push through and give it everything they had. Despite the loss, the girls’ season ended with a strong record of 14-9.
Good luck to the future girls basketball program!
