Upcoming Track Meets by Marcus Silva
One of the most exciting parts of track and field are the meets where track athletes compete against each other. With the start of track season, there is a short period between the first practice and the first meet. This can be quite nerve racking for new athletes to track and field who haven’t had many practices, especially since competing in general can be anxiety inducing for some. However, it is always a very fun time and if you ask any athlete who is in this sport, they’ll all say that the meets are the best part of track.
The first meet of the season is this Friday, March 22. Traditionally, the first high school meet is at an indoor track. This year the meet will be at Grand Valley State University, which is considered by many to be the best indoor track in the state. Grand Valley’s Track is 300 meters, which is 100 meters short of the standard 400 meter track. This is great as it gives newcomers to the sport the opportunity to get a feel for running on a track while also running a shorter distance per lap. The indoor track also provides ideal running conditions, with no wind and ideal temperatures leading to many good times to start off the season. Indoor meets are great for trying new events that athletes might be interested in.
There are more meets following Grand Valley. These will be the standard track and field meets. When interviewed about what he was looking forward to the most about the first few meets, Sawyer Monroe, a freshman distance runner said, “Just seeing how much my training in the off season paid off.” Almost, if not all indoor track athletes, are doing outdoor track; this will give them an advantage as they know how the indoor meets work and how to race on an indoor track better than others.
The majority of the upcoming meets will be after Spring Break, including the home meets, which are many kids’ favorites. The upcoming season is generating a lot of excitement and is sure to be a great time.
