Summer Jobs by Lily Locker
With the final trimester in full swing, many students are looking ahead to their summer plans. Summer jobs give students a great opportunity to earn some extra money and gain experience in a workplace setting. Going through the application process, learning to cooperate with coworkers and a boss, and scheduling for work are all important steps in gaining valuable skills needed in a real workplace environment someday.
Many students get jobs in restaurants over the summer, while others work in retail. Some teenagers work odd jobs, like mowing lawns for neighbors or babysitting. Milo Haddock, a freshman at SHS, had this to say about his summer job in the food industry: "I work at the Grilled Cheese Shack along with Basecamp in downtown Saugatuck. It gave me a view on how systems like money work. I also learned how to communicate better with other people. I like my job a lot; making food is a really fun thing to do."An interesting thing about Milo's summer job is that it is founded by an SHS alumnus. The Grilled Cheese Shack and Basecamp are owned and operated by Natilie Martinson, who graduated from Saugatuck High School just a few years ago.
While jobs in the food industry are great for teens, many also work in retail. Xander Verhelst, a senior at SHS, had this insight about his job in retail:"I work at Landsharks. I have learned a lot from my bosses David and Casey. They have helped me learn a lot about customer service and how to talk to customers. At first, I had a hard time with backstocking, but now I know a lot about different brands of shoes and what brand someone might need based on whether they have, like, flat arches or something. I am planning on getting a second job this summer, either hosting at the Mermaid or working at Douglas Oval Beach. I'm saving up for when I move to Europe so I will have some extra money to go shopping and travel to different destinations around Europe."
Whether you're saving up for college, a big trip or event, or just want some extra cash, summer jobs are a great way to earn money and learn about the workforce!
