Quiz Bowl Begins! by Emma Schoonmaker
The 2023 Quiz Bowl season is here, and all the Saugatuck players are very excited to get started. For those new to the sport, the general premise of the competition is that there are two teams of four that battle against each other with 20 minutes to respond to all of the trivia questions. Whichever team hits the buzzer first gets the first chance to present their answers. If, however, their answers are incorrect, then the other team gets a chance to answer as well.
All teams in Michigan compete against the other teams in their county, and then if they do well enough, they go on to the state competition. Saugatuck’s quiz bowl team competes against all Allegan County Teams and hopefully on to Lansing, where the state competition is held.
This year there is a JV and Varsity team, and Mr. Whitcomb has been there to run the tryouts. So far, Lilliana Aumaugher, Augie Boyers, Frankie Bullinger, Petra Johnson, Liam Norbeck, Clara Suarino, and Layla Vinten-Johansen are all on the team. A question that Augie Boyers was asked was, “Why did you join the team?” Augie responded with, “I’ve always been a nerd so it’s good to put that to use. Trivia is fun.” Liam Norbeck is 12th in the state and Augi is 14th.
Quiz Bowl is a very fun thing to be a part of because students gain knowledge and random facts about almost anything. If you want to sound smart, you can just pull out a random fact that you learned from quiz bowl and impress everyone around you. Doing quiz bowl may even help you get your grades up because you can take studying tips and ideas from the other quiz bowl players. Studying methods and techniques will become as familiar as the back of your hand.
