Who’s Your Favorite Basketball Player and Why? by Mylah Simpson
When people think of their favorite basketball player, they usually think of someone like Michael Jordan or Lebron James. But not all people think of the same person. Some think of highly rated players, while others think of the underrated ones. Some think of women, while others think of men. It doesn’t matter who; everyone has a different perspective, and this article will focus on students and teachers at Saugatuck High School and their favorite basketball player, and why.
A student at SHS, Mariela Garcia, stated that her favorite player is “Kevin Durant, because me and my brother grew up watching him together. He is also my brother's favorite player and I look up to my brother.” While a lot of people’s favorite players are based on their skill level, others have a favorite player because of the connections they have developed from watching with family and friends.
Many have a favorite player based on their love for how the game was once played. Ms. Lewis, a teacher at Saugatuck, argued that her favorite player is “Micheal Jordan, because the NBA has become a bunch of whiny boys, and I like to keep to my old alliances to the game.” Numerous people believe that the game was better back then because of the style of play and the level of physicality that was involved. As a result they choose their favorite player based on their style of play.
Others like a specific team and choose their favorite player based on that team. Students Soren Peterson and Walt Bos answered with Cade Cunningham and Ben Wallace, because they play or have played on the Detroit Pistons. Many people choose their favorite player based on the team they are loyal to and grew up watching.
Some have simple answers when it comes to their favorite player. Another student at Saugatuck, Dante Holley, stated that his favorite player is “Anthony Edwards, because he dunks on people.” A different student, Grant Rehkopf, answered simply saying that his favorite player is “Stephen Curry, because he’s him.” A senior, Brook Simpson, said that her favorite player is “Micheal Jordan because he’s the GOAT.” While lots of students have more complex answers, many just have simple ones.
Everyone has different reasons for why they like a specific basketball player. It could be because of their style of play, the time they played in, the team they play for, or just because they're the “GOAT.” It doesn’t matter why, everyone has a different reason. So what’s yours?
