Toronto Maple Leafs v Edmonton Oilers by Novella DeGraaf
Just this past Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the Edmonton Oilers went up against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This game was very important for both teams. The Oilers were fighting to retain the 11 game winning streak and the Maple Leafs were trying to get out of their 3 game losing streak.
In the first period, the Maple Leafs took an early start to the game. With only 19:33 on the clock (each period is 20 minutes long) the Maple Leafs got their first score of the game; only 27 seconds into the game! Mitchell Marner weaved through the Oilers defense and sent a hard pass to Austin Mattews for the first goal, giving the Maple Leafs that early lead. Each team exchanged some shots on the goal. The Leafs made another great attempt for a two point lead, however, the goalie, Stuart Skinner, made a miraculous save not willing to give up another early point to the Leafs. The final score and the end of the first was 1-0, Maple Leafs leading.
In the second period, the Maple Leafs continued at the net, trying to find an opening for another goal. After pinballing it around to several players, the puck made its way to Morgan Rielly. Rielly made a close shot that went right through the goalkeeper's legs and into the net. However, the Oilers didn’t want to let that slide. Not long after the Leaf’s goal, the Oilers followed right back up and got their own to finally make this a game. There was much suspicion among the refs on this specific play, however. After further reviewing the play, the Oilers had been offside, making the goal invalid. This call didn’t stop them though. At about the 4 minute mark of the second period, the Oilers made another attempt. After passing it around, opening up space and confusing the goalie, they were able to slide one in to make their first mark on the board. The score after the second was 2-1, with the Maple Leafs still leading.
In the third and final period, the Oilers started off with a bang. Mattias Janmark was up top on the offensive zone line. He passed it down to Derek Ryan who then slotted it into the goal. This goal created a brand new game for the Oilers because they were now tied up with the Leafs, 2-2. With three minutes left in the third period, the Oilers took a far shot from the back that was then rebounded by Ryan McLeod who went for another shot, making it into the goal. The game had now become very tight with theOilers having the lead 3-2. The Leafs try to come back to possibly tie and go into overtime or a shootout. In a last minute effort to try and get better odds of a goal, the Leafs took out their goalkeeper to put more players on offense. However, with an empty net at the other end of the ice, they are very vulnerable. The Oilers took full advantage of this. Evan Buchard shot a shot all the way across the ice, finishing the game off with an end game netter.
With the final score of the game being 4-2, the Edmonton Oilers keep their winning streak for now and the Toronto Maple Leafs go home with yet another loss.
