Destroy Boys by Aiden Zylman
Destroy Boys is a punk rock band from Sacramento, California that formed in 2015. In 2017, they received nominations for "New Artist," "Punk/post-punk," and "Teen" categories in the 25th Sacramento Area Music Awards. A year later, they won Do The Bay's contest to play the Noise Pop Festival. Their second album, “Make Room,” was named among Maximumrocknroll's top 10 albums of 2018.
The band was founded by Roditis and Mayugba on October 6, 2015, as an acoustic project. Roditis was to play drums while Mayugba would sing and play guitar. The name "Destroy Boys" came from Mayugba's chalkboard at home during a challenging relationship time. The band released their debut EP, "Mom Jeans," digitally in 2015, with Roditis on vocals and Mayugba on acoustic guitar. Shortly after, Knight's mother told him that she would stop paying for his drum lessons unless he joined a band, so he contacted Mayugba, whom he knew as the child of Phallucy guitarist Sonny Mayugba and the Skirts vocalist Lynn Mayugba. Mayugba responded by sending him their EP, which impressed him and led to him joining the group. Mayugba then switched to playing electric guitar.
The band has a diverse musical style that has been categorized as punk rock, garage punk, hardcore punk, garage rock, rock and roll, and riot grrrl. They draw inspiration from various sources, including 1980s punk rock bands like Operation Ivy and the Misfits, contemporary musical groups such as Dog Party and much of the Uncool Records line-up, Against Me, The Who, The Garden, Sleater-Kinney, Lady Gaga, Deftones, the Distillers, Black Sabbath, and the Police. They have described their sound as "What would happen if Blondie stumbled into a Misfits recording session".
The San Francisco Chronicle described their music as "equal parts hardcore and fun". Roditis, the band member, says that their biggest vocal influences are Siouxsie Sioux from Siouxsie and the Banshees, Brooks Nielsen from The Growlers, and Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend.
