Boys Volleyball Is Starting! by Calvin Miller
March 13th marks the very beginning of Saugatuck boys volleyball. For the first time ever, Saugatuck has started a recreational boys volleyball team and next Monday will be the first in-season practice. These practices will be Monday through Friday from 7-9pm to avoid clashing with the other Spring sports in order to favor the dual sporters on the team.
There were a significant number of players that joined the team despite it being a very new and foreign sport for a lot of these boys. There are currently ten boys signed up, which is a very adequate amount of people to have six players on the court and a good amount of subs. The players that are currently signed up include: Noah DeBoer, Cameron Lewis, Calvin Miller, Brighton Vanhorn, Caiden Pearson, Noah Conklin, Misael Gamboa, Mason Rehkopf, Noah Bierma, and Alejandro Best.
Since January of this year, the boys volleyball coach, Lauren Miller, has been holding open gyms in an attempt to try to get the boys as ready as possible for the volleyball season. The team has been running drills and practicing rotation so they are able to play at their full potential during the season.
In the boys volleyball regular season there are a total of 7 events. Two of them are single games, 1 dual game event, and 4 quad matches. These events will be hosted at Fennville High School, Kalamazoo Christian, St Joseph, Battle Creek, and Zeeland.
In addition, they are setting up a co-op with Black River in order to eliminate the possibility of not having enough players in games when taking into consideration that a lot of the players may have other sporting outings they might attend instead of volleyball. The co-op would give us more players so we have a safe amount of people at all times.
There will also be a tournament that the team will be attending hosted at Impact Dynamic Training on March 25. This will be a tournament that is used as a pre-season kickoff for the boys volleyball season. It will be split into Varsity and Junior Varsity. There will be four guaranteed matches and depending on how you do you may move into bracket play, or you will be out of the tournament.
