Burundi by Daniela Nkurunziza
If you did not no know, I am only half German and half Burundian, but I am living in Germany. My mother is German and my dad is from Burundi, a small country in east Africa. He came to Germany 21 years after traveling around the world to coach basketball. He met my mum and married her and stayed in Germany.
I want to tell you some facts about my second home country. Burundi is one of the smallest countries in Africa. People also call Burundi the heart of Africa because the country is shaped like a real human heart. And it is in the middle of Africa where the heart is placed in a human body.
In the country of Burundi are around 11 million people, most of them living on the land and providing agriculture. Burundi is famous for its agriculture. They make profits from the amount of fruits and vegetables they cultivate. The capital city is called Gitega, where my dad was born. At the same time, Bujumbura is the biggest city in Burundi, another kind of capital where my family lives. My dad's family moved to Bujumbura when he was at a really young age. My dad grew up with his mum, dad, and his six younger siblings in the city of Bujumbura. He went to school there and spent the first part of his life there.
I visited Burundi once and I can tell it is a happy place. People are so nice and happy, even if they do not have enough money or do not get enough food. They never forget to smile and that really touched my heart. Burundi suffered many years because of government corruption and civil war, so their government had to deal with a lot of crises.
All in all, Burundi is such a beautiful place. The country is not on the ocean side, but it has a lake called Lake Tanganyika. It is like Lake Michigan. Fun fact : Lake Tanganyika is the 6th biggest lake in the world while Lake Michigan is the 5th biggest lake in the world. Lake Tanganyika and palms and an area around the beach. The animals there are so stunning ; there are different kinds of birds, lions, giraffes and alligators. It was such a cool experience to see these kinds of animals for the first time. I love this place.
I hope I can go back there as soon as possible.
