Quenton Shelton by Aiden Zylman
Seventh grader Quenton Shelton is a new student at Saugatuck Middle School. He was previously at Maple Grove Elementary School, but had to move to Saugatuck. He stated that his mother got a new boyfriend, so he had to move schools.
When he was asked how changing schools affected him, he responded, “It has been nice except for losing my friends from elementary school.” How school has been so far for him was, “It’s nice, I got a lot of new friends.” He wasn’t too scared since his older brother was at the school before him.
Quenton mentioned that he found a hidden love for math and that he wants to major in culinary arts in the future. He currently is not doing any extracurricular activities and prefers to just lie down. Getting to know Quenton more, he claims, “My favorite show is currently Spongebob Squarepants and my favorite genre of music is hip hop.”
Meeting all his new friends and the fact his brother graduated from Saugatuck provides a sense of comfort and confidence in the school change. “I was scared at first, but because of my friends, the new school wasn’t as scary anymore,” stated Quenton. He was glad he could find people to relate to and bond with about interests such as math and Spongebob. More familiarity seemed to be all he was lacking; he quickly found that sense of belonging and familiarity, letting his learning take off.
Quenton’s strong will and determination have filled him with the courage to fulfill his dream of being a culinary artist. His game-developing hobby could get him far, but he stated, “I truly believe I’ll be doing culinary arts someday. I dream of succeeding in that field.” Quenton's seventh-grade year has taken off with a culinary passion and creative mind.
