Jessica Richardson-Smaller by Julia Lowery
With the senior's school year slowly wrapping up and graduation just around the corner, Seniors are facing the ups and downs of graduating and having to part with Saugatuck High School. All have different paths; whether that’s college, the workforce, a gap year, or going to a trade school. This year's class of 2023 is taking a step into the real world. To give more insight into her plans for the future after high school, and looking back on senior year, I interviewed senior Jessica Richardson-Smaller.
Although she has yet to commit to a college, Jess has been looking at the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin, and Loyola University Chicago. Her interests in degrees lie in the sciences, and she is planning on going into Pre Med, Bio Med, or chemistry. When asked about possible careers for after college, she mentioned becoming an orthopedic surgeon, but if that doesn't work out, something in forensics. She is excited to make it to college and be able to show that all her hard work during high school has paid off. Jess is also looking forward to expanding her circle and making new friends outside of Saugatuck.
At Saugatuck, seniors are the biggest leaders when it comes to our student section at any sporting event. Jessica says that this is one of her favorite things about senior year. She says, “I'm trying to make the most of it because it's my last year, and go all out.” Though there are so many joys of senior year, there are inevitably stressors of college. Jessica talks about how even though the college application process can be very stressful, she continues to have fun.
Seniors have made it through all four years of their high school careers. They know what it’s like to succeed and fail, how to put in college applications, or even how to file for FAFSA. With the knowledge of going through high school, what advice would Seniors give to the underclassmen? When I asked Jessica this question she said: “Work hard and pay attention, especially when you're a freshman; even if it feels like it doesn’t matter, it does. Have fun though; don’t stress out too much over the little things.”
Wishing Jessica the best of luck in these upcoming years!
