The Willow Project by Milo Haddock
We all know Alaska, the beautiful frozen home to over 21 thousand different species. Well, some might be concerned that Alaska might not quite fit that description anymore.
The Willow Project, originally introduced in 2018 by ConocoPhillips, is a six billion dollar project that is meant to drill oil out of the National Petroleum Reserve, which is federal land containing around 5-600 million barrels of oil. This oil would be able to fire around 70 new coal powered plants each year. But at the same time, people point out how the project is adding more fuel to an already burning ecosystem.
OSo obviously, the topic is very controversial. Let's look at both sides of this. Why is the Willow Project considered a good thing? The project is said to be able to provide lots of Alaskan citizens with jobs, and will also reduce the United States dependency on foreign countries for oil. Alaskan citizens also claim that the project will provide the needed funding for education and healthcare, and have urged the Biden administration to approve of it.
But of course, like most projects that involve human interference with the natural environment, there will be some downsides to this. Other inhabitants of Alaska who live closer to where the project would be taking place claim that the project will have a great negative impact on the health of the natural environment in the area.
There are also concerns that parts of Alaska will not be receiving as much negative impact from Willow that others are.
Online protests have also begun to spread around the internet. Over one million letters in disagreement of Willow have been mailed to the Biden administration, and over 2 million signatures on Change.org to stop the project from taking action.
As of now, it is still unknown whether the project will for certain take effect or not, but protests still remain prominent all across the U.S against The Willow Project.
